Yes, that’s what they thought… That night, the innkeepers thought they were turning away Joseph and Mary. They did not realize that one after another, they were rejecting the greatest opportunity of their lives to host the most magnificent guest ever in history.
The innkeepers’ rejection resulted in the divine birth taking place in a stable, thus fulfilling the plan of the Most High to incarnate in a humble manger, to announce the joyful message to humble shepherds, and to receive – only 3 – gifts from humble magi who “…when they saw the child, with Mary his mother, they fell to the ground and worshiped him” (Matthew 2:11). From the very first moment the plan of our redemption began on earth, Jesus overturned the predictions of a glorious coming, “turning his back” on the glory of luxurious buildings, flashy garments, and grand ceremonies, and instead, received honor and worship from people with humble hearts, who immediately recognized who stood before them. The innkeepers did not recognize Him. Do you recognize Him?
